Originally trained as a jewellery designer Michelle McKinney's work has gradually evolved to a much larger scale with original artworks in woven metal and perspex.
Michelle is inspired by the theme of journeys, the tracing of a path and reaching for an unknown destination. There is a real sense of freedom and movement in her work.
In her Journey series, Michelle plays with the contrast between strength and fragility in her choice of materials and subject matter. She creates hundreds of fragile translucent butterfly wings in steel, copper and brass, materials known for their weight and strength. Each tiny element of her artworks, of which there are hundreds, are hand cut with a jeweller's attention to detail. Each element is then gradually put together piece by piece to create a unique multi layered three dimensional artwork.
