 
CERAMICS
Maria is a ceramic designer-maker who is excited by the expressive potential of tableware. She’s interested in how we form emotional attachments to objects, her work explores and encourages this interaction. Her key objective is to create functional objects that bring something special to our day-to-day lives. Her bone china collections use form and texture to invite the user to engage in a conversation with the work, through the sense of touch. Maria references ceramic traditions which often provoke curiosity. She enjoys how narratives can be formed through a lifetime of use; an object such as a teacup can become an old friend. The consumers’ experience when using her tableware is of particular importance to her.
Within her collection of Fluid bowls Maria wanted to capture a feeling of precision and crispness, combined and contrasted by fluid distortions. She achieved this by gently manipulating each of the forms as they came out of the mould, therefore creating lines of movement around the pieces. She has designed this collection with the inherent qualities of the material in mind. Every piece is unique and possesses its own animated fluid form.
Maria has recently developed the Bloom Collection, which is made from bone china and features hand applied sprigs. Each piece is unique as she applies the blooms in different combinations and arrangements. She likes the idea that you can choose your favourite design and build up a family of pieces each with their own pattern.
This collection includes the Bloom cups, which have the capacity of a mug yet with the refined qualities of a china tea cup. The hand applied sprigs are tactile and encourage people to engage with the object. You can also choose from the Bloom Jugs, Bloom Bowls and Bloom Lights. The Bloom Lights are designed to hold tea-lights, and once lit, illuminate these floral details.
The Bloom Vase also features these sprigs around the sides of the vessel. Selected blooms frame holes around the vase and allow you to play with the flower placements. This enables flower stems to grow out of the side of the vases as well as the top.
Other collections include Skylight - a bone china table light for full length candles. She developed the process she uses to create these pieces, while studying for her masters at The Royal College of Art. It enables her to work back through the finish glazed piece in order to achieve a relief image. As the candle burns different parts of this image are revealed.
Maria’s handmade collections are all slip-cast in fine bone china and are available in a variety of colours.
Maria has an MA from the Royal College of Art in Ceramics and Glass and first class honours degree from Central Saint Martins.
