  • KATE WICKHAM

Originally from Sheffield, Yorkshire, Kate trained at Camberwell College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, and now lives and works in Sussex.

Kate makes hand built painterly vessel forms exploring a number of ideas and themes – landscapes, domestic interiors, seascapes etc. – through abstraction and symbolism, and through the use of colour, texture, mark making and gestural drawing. Both drawing and painting inform the work and all pieces are one off or small limited editions. Each of Kate's vessels is hand built using slabs of white stoneware clay. The clay surfaces are drawn onto and incised into both before and after she builds them. Layers of colour are then built up using slips, oxides, body stains, underglaze colours and glazes. Kate then fires the work to about 1120 degree C.

Kate's work is in both private and public collections in Britain and abroad, including the Crafts Council collection and South East Arts.

She is the founder and head of the Ceramics Diploma course at City Lit College in central London.
