CERAMICS
Deborah loves textured fabrics and uses the juxtaposition of surface details such as the weave, frayed edges, stray threads, folds, seams and gathers, the controlled and random to create a composition. She explores the way material drapes and hangs either as abstract pieces or as dresses.
Deborah impregnates pieces of fabric with clay by drawing them through a shallow trough of china slip before hanging them to dry.
During the firing process the fabric burns away leaving a china ghost of the original. The pure whiteness of the bone china is retained and the 'dresses' are mounted in specially made deep frames on white watercolour paper behind glass like iconic remnants from the past.
