Sasha’s slip cast ceramics developed from a fascination of natural objects and a love of multiples. Inspired by the strange and wonderful vegetables found in the Turkish shops near her home; she developed mould making skills with the help of her ceramicist friend Samantha Dickenson. Originally she cast dried aubergines in porcelain transforming the mushroom-like forms into tiny lights, which she installed en-mass in woodland at the Big Chill festival night time art trail in 2001.
Sasha continued casting in porcelain in larger and more complex organic forms; developing a strange obsession for the many types of melons to be found! The delicate textured surfaces of the melons were captured by the porcelain which became translucent and glowed when lit. Sasha started developing porcelain lighting products and exhibited at Designers Block, also in 2001. The development of her lighting took a back seat for a while when she worked in design retail as a buyer. In 2004 she exhibited with Hidden Art at 100% Design and sold the Butternut Squash chandelier that she exhibited, which was installed in a Hauf House in Tunbridge Wells. In 2005 Sasha exhibited again at Designers Block, which saw the introduction of a range of earthenware vessels to complement her lighting. In 2007 Sasha launched this range at Handmade in Britain.
The vessels exist as a range of vases and bowls available in a variety of sizes
& in white satin, pewter and antique brass glazes.
Chandeliers are bespoke and are commissioned to suit – length of drop, the shape of the cast pieces and also the hanging formation.
All of Sasha’s lighting complies to and has passed British Standard tests.
Sasha graduated with a Fine Art BAHons from The Nottingahm Trent University in 1997.
