paintings

  • sarah macdonald

Through Sarah's paintings she has been able to examine her own perception of space. She takes particular details from photographs of tower blocks and domestic interiors. She selects angular shapes and strong lines to build up another composition. She then layers the images over a rather intricate wallpaper pattern. She builds up different shapes, colours and tones that she can control. The qualities of the paint and the process of hand rendering, what might look like a mechanical gesture allows her to build upon an abstract composition. It is the new shapes created from these two different planes operating together, which she can use to heighten certain qualities of the image. Whilst painting, she thinks about each part, each layer in relation to the development of the whole. Because this is a gradual process, she has time to consider and reconsider the possibilities that are emerging. The repetitive lines and curves in the wallpaper pattern create a sense of order and control, which is inevitable within a process of repeat mass production.

Sarah studied Fine Art/Textiles at Goldsmith's College and graduated in 2000.  Since graduating, Sarah's work has been shown in numerous exhbitions in London and around the rest of the UK.
