Paintings
Graduating from Goldsmiths College in 2000, Nick Locke aims to break down the complex elements within his subject matter, reducing content to form, line and colour.
Working exclusively with orchids, Nick extracts the features key to the flower's appeal. Surface details- such as the intricate patterns and hues adorning each petal- are distilled to bold silhouettes of pure colour. The viewer is denied any indulgence in the orchid’s seductive surface and instead is encouraged to focus on the form.
However, the notion of a ‘seductive surface’ is not lost: it is reinterpreted through the materials Nick uses. Executed in household gloss on aluminium, each of the paintings possess a heightened sheen and are sumptuous in texture and colour.
In the first instance, Nick's paintings appear to possess the crisp uniformity of graphic design. Upon closer inspection, the layered 3-D quality comes to light.
Each work is delicately constructed, carefully composed and painted by hand. Indeed, each piece is as unique as the orchid flower used for their inspiration.
