PAINTINGS

  • Mia Cavaliero

Mia has always worked with existential themes both in painting and installation; memory in particular is a source of both inspiration and fascination for her.  Her work has often been concerned with binding relationships, emphasising qualities of wrapping, entwinning, connecting, lossening, trapping, letting go and she is interested in the formal qualities of binding materials such as string and wire. The use of colour also has personal emotional resonance.

The new paintings are closely related to themes of birth, life and death and there is a haunted quality to them.  The sensual act of painting can allow pre-cognitive memories or sense memories to surface.  During the making of these paintings she was concerned with the way memories and desires manifest to us - particularly through dreams.  The element of water is significant in the work as a metaphor for birth and the life force but also for sweeping and washing away.
