Chris investigates the functions of images, signs and systems and their effectiveness to communicate information. An arbitrarily configured piece of string forms the subject of these paintings. Placed upon an opaque projector, the image is projected onto the canvas and filled with thick oil paint. This application of paint establishes a reference to current trends in abstract painting, but it is also the figure. The surface to which the figure is applied is an area of randomly placed and blurred colour. Set on this ground, the figure appears to float. The optical trick creates and illusionary picture.
Chris was born in the UK but raised in Canada. He was winner of the New Canadian Painting Competition and has had a number of solo exhibtions in Canada. Chris is currently living and working in the UK.
