CERAMICS
Anja Lubach is a potter who explores the vessel and the relationship between the maker, the material and process. Each piece is wheel thrown in porcelain and then whilst still in a plastic state subjected to a variety of physical actions. Highly reflective oxidised glazes give a feeling of plasticity and softness to the finished object.
Anja has recently been inspired by the narrative and visual qualities of religious art and icon imagery.
The present body of work explores the smooth, translucent and pure material properties of porcelain, through multiple prints taken from Madonna and Angel figurines and found, ornamental surfaces.
Their serene faces appear like an audience watching the vessels interior space or gazing out into the distance, stretching through the surface of the vessels walls with a sense of animation and metamorphosis.
The textured surfaces are of an evocative nature and are often only discovered on closer inspection as figurative detail. The viewer will create his or her own narrative, depending on personal memory and imagination, whilst each vessel is an exploration of proportion and dramatic composition through the physical process of imprinting.
